Tony Awards 2026 Live Updates: John Lithgow and Laurie Metcalf Win Early Awards

Pink did not expect to be asked to host the Tony Awards, but the opportunity quickly made sense to her when the show’s organizers explained why they wanted her. They told her that she loves theater, that two of her songs have been featured in the stage productions “& Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge!,” and that she could help bring more attention to Broadway. That appeal resonated with Pink, who said she felt she could be useful in a meaningful way.

Her 15-year-old daughter, Willow Sage Hart, also played a major role in the decision. Willow is a passionate Broadway fan and aspiring performer, and she enthusiastically supported the idea. In August, Pink and her husband, Carey Hart, relocated their family to New York so Willow could attend an arts high school. Since then, the family has spent much of their time attending theater performances and curtain calls.

Pink, 46, has been preparing for the Tony Awards by rehearsing new musical numbers written by her friends Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known for “Dear Evan Hansen,” as well as Mark Sonnenblick. She has been working alongside Broadway performers including Shoshana Bean, Christiani Pitts and Sara Chase, all of whom are Tony nominees this year. Although she is used to performing in high-pressure environments, Pink said the Tony experience has introduced her to unfamiliar challenges, which she finds exciting because they are stretching her as an artist.

She reflected on her early love of theater, recalling childhood trips to see touring productions in Philadelphia while growing up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. She remembered playing the role of Rumpleteazer in a school production of “Cats” and said that moment made her realize she wanted to be onstage. For her, theater provided a space where kids like her could feel free, breathe, and be themselves without fear of judgment.

Pink also described her own concerts as highly theatrical, blending “circus” elements with rock opera and storytelling. Even so, she said she would not be doing as much aerial work at the Tonys as she originally wanted, because Radio City Music Hall could not support the full scale of her usual performances. Still, she emphasized that the event was not about her. One of her conditions in accepting the hosting role was that she would be willing to make fun of herself, keeping the tone playful and light.

Despite her long career as a high-energy live performer, Pink said she remains amazed by the discipline and talent of Broadway artists. She praised the speed with which they learn complex material and admired the range of skills on display across the theater community. She also said she felt deeply moved by the support she and her daughter have received from Broadway insiders.

For Pink, hosting the Tonys is both a professional challenge and a personal tribute. Onstage, she said she wants to celebrate the people who make Broadway work and honor the artistry, commitment, and joy that define the theater world.
