Box Office: “Backrooms” Becomes A24’s Highest-Grossing Film Worldwide
A24’s Backrooms has become the studio’s highest-grossing film ever just 10 days after release, with a global box office total of $212.6 million. The film has already surpassed the previous A24 record holder, Marty Supreme, which finished with $191.2 million worldwide. Directed by Kane Parsons and based on his viral online concept, the film is continuing to perform strongly across multiple international markets despite a steep second-weekend drop in North America.
Backrooms earned $50.1 million worldwide in its second frame across 52 territories, including $25.9 million domestically and $24.1 million overseas. Its total North American box office now stands at $135 million, while international revenue has reached $77.6 million. Even with a 68% decline in its second domestic weekend, the movie remains one of A24’s biggest commercial successes and is playing broadly as a major theatrical release rather than a niche genre title.
The film delivered standout results in several territories. In Spain, Backrooms opened at No. 1 with $2 million. It also set the best opening weekend ever for an A24 title in Malaysia and the Philippines. In Latin America, where the movie has earned $24.2 million, it is now A24’s highest-grossing release ever in the region. In the United Kingdom, Backrooms recorded the studio’s biggest opening weekend ever there and also logged the best horror opening of the year so far, with a weekend take of $3 million and a total of $11.6 million. In Australia and New Zealand, it has reached $7.9 million, making it A24’s top-grossing title in that territory. South Korea posted only an 11% drop from opening weekend, bringing the film to $5.7 million and setting another A24 record in the market.
The box office performance marks a rapid rise for A24, with Backrooms reaching the top spot in the studio’s history in roughly the first 10 days of release. By comparison, Marty Supreme took 53 days to become A24’s highest-grossing title before being overtaken by Everything Everywhere All at Once, which finished with $147.9 million worldwide. Backrooms achieved its domestic record in only six days, passing Marty Supreme’s U.S. total of $96 million.
The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve and was produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, 21 Laps, Phobos, and Chernin Entertainment. It was made for under $10 million, with a domestic marketing spend in the low tens of millions, making its box office run especially notable for A24 and its partners.
Elsewhere in the market, Focus Features’ Obsession has reached $224.6 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing title for the Universal Classic label and surpassing Downton Abbey. Lionsgate’s Michael is also on track to become the studio’s highest-grossing film ever, reflecting a strong summer for several major specialty and genre-driven releases.
