Argentina Cup key: the six matches before the World Cup

The 2026 Copa Argentina will continue before the start of the World Cup with six of the nine remaining round-of-32 matches scheduled between Saturday, May 30, and Wednesday, June 3. The tournament will deliver several high-profile clashes and help define the round of 16 bracket.
Action begins on Saturday, May 30, at 3:00 p.m. with Gimnasia de Jujuy vs. Belgrano in Santiago del Estero. The winner will face Racing or Defensa y Justicia, who meet on Sunday, May 31, at 7:00 p.m. The same Saturday will also feature Instituto vs. Lanús at 6:00 p.m. in Newell’s, with the victor set to play Platense in the next round.
One of the most anticipated matches comes on Sunday, May 31, when Rosario Central faces Estudiantes LP at 3:30 p.m. at the Mario Kempes Stadium in Córdoba. The winner will advance to play Huracán or Barracas Central, who are scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, at 9:10 p.m.
The final match before the World Cup break will be San Lorenzo vs. Deportivo Riestra on Wednesday, June 3, at 9:10 p.m., with the venue set for Deportivo Morón. Gimnasia LP is already waiting in the round of 16.
Three other round-of-32 matches still do not have a confirmed date: Boca vs. Sarmiento, River vs. Aldosivi, and Tigre vs. Independiente Rivadavia. Their scheduling will complete the final stretch of the tournament’s early knockout phase.
Several teams have already secured their places in the round of 16. Those qualified so far are Independiente, Atlético Tucumán, Platense, Vélez, Gimnasia LP, Midland, and Banfield. The first confirmed round-of-16 pairings are Banfield vs. Midland and Atlético Tucumán vs. Independiente.
The early rounds have already produced a string of notable results. Gimnasia LP advanced after defeating Acassuso 3-0, while Midland beat Deportivo Morón 2-1. Vélez moved on with a 2-0 win over Gimnasia y Tiro, and Banfield eliminated San Martín de Tucumán on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Platense also needed penalties to get past San Martín de San Juan after a goalless match. Atlético Tucumán impressed with a 3-0 victory over Talleres, and Independiente defeated Unión 2-0.
The 32nd-final stage also featured wins by Rosario Central, Tigre, River, Boca, San Lorenzo, Huracán, Defensa y Justicia, Instituto, Estudiantes LP, Sarmiento, and Gimnasia de Mendoza’s elimination on penalties against Gimnasia y Tiro. The tournament bracket is now entering a decisive phase, with the remaining round-of-32 matches set to complete the path toward the round of 16 and a stronger picture of the 2026 Copa Argentina title race.
