Mavericks Land Young Sharpshooter and Elite Defensive Forward in Trade

The Dallas Mavericks could be active this offseason, with a mock trade proposal suggesting a deal centered on center Daniel Gafford, forward Dalton Knecht, and Jarred Vanderbilt. The scenario comes as the Mavericks continue to deal with uncertainty in their frontcourt, especially after Gafford spent much of the season managing a right ankle injury that limited him from day one of training camp.
The proposed deal would send Gafford to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Knecht and Vanderbilt, giving Dallas a younger shooter in Knecht and a defensive-minded reserve in Vanderbilt. The Mavericks would also preserve flexibility for the future, potentially adding to their draft capital and building around their upcoming roster decisions. With three first-round picks projected in 2026, Dallas would have options if it chooses to move on from Gafford and address its big-man depth through the draft.
The idea of pairing Luka Doncic with Gafford again is rooted in the success the two have had together in pick-and-roll action. Gafford has been an effective lob threat and energy big when healthy, but his availability has been a concern. ESPN’s Bobby Marks noted that Dallas would likely need reassurance about Dereck Lively II’s health before considering a move involving Gafford. Lively played only seven games this season and underwent right foot surgery in December, making the Mavericks’ center rotation a key issue entering the offseason.
For the Mavericks, Knecht could be the most intriguing part of the return. The former Tennessee standout showed promise as a rookie, averaging 9.1 points across 78 games and making 16 starts, but his role has dipped significantly in his second season. His shooting ability could provide spacing around Cooper Flagg and help revive his value in a different environment. Vanderbilt, meanwhile, would bring defense, length, and versatility, though his limited offensive game and salary make him a questionable long-term fit.
From the Lakers’ perspective, the trade would help them move on from Vanderbilt’s contract while adding a reliable interior presence in Gafford. Los Angeles would also gain a player with proven chemistry alongside Doncic, which could make the fit more appealing. Still, the move would come with risk for Dallas if Lively’s injury issues persist and Gafford is no longer in the picture. The trade would not guarantee a clear win for either side, but it underscores how much the Mavericks’ frontcourt health could shape their offseason strategy.
