Roland-Garros 2026: Halys Shifts the Script on Day 6 Under the Lights

French player Quentin Halys has made several unconventional choices in his clay-court preparation ahead of Roland-Garros, hoping they will improve his chances at this year’s tournament. Rather than following the usual route after the hard-court swing in Miami, Halys moved directly to clay with no adjustment period, a decision that produced only modest results. After Madrid, he also chose to skip the Masters 1000 event in Rome and instead entered a Challenger event in Bordeaux to gain more match practice. That decision paid off with a run to the semifinals, giving him more confidence and momentum heading into Paris.
Halys, ranked world No. 90, acknowledged that he cannot place unrealistic expectations on himself at Roland-Garros. He said he cannot arrive with the belief that he will win the tournament or go all the way to the final weekend. Instead, his focus is on arriving in the best possible condition and building confidence through competitive matches. He described the Bordeaux event as the best preparation for trying to go as deep as possible at Roland-Garros, and said the fact that he now has a third match in the tournament setup is encouraging.
His opponent, Alexander Zverev, enters the matchup with far greater experience and stronger credentials on the Paris clay. Over the past five years, Zverev has reached one final, three semifinals and one quarterfinal at Roland-Garros, underlining his consistency at the event. His game is well suited to clay, with a powerful serve, heavy groundstrokes, strong movement and excellent reach, all of which make him a serious contender again this year.
Zverev also holds a previous win over Halys. The two met once before, in Miami earlier this year, where Zverev won in straight sets. That result adds to the challenge facing Halys as he looks to translate his recent preparation into a breakthrough performance against one of the tournament’s leading players.
The contrast between the two players is clear: Halys is trying to use smart scheduling and match rhythm to maximize his form, while Zverev brings a proven Roland-Garros record and a stylistic advantage on clay. For Halys, the focus is on competing with confidence and using the momentum from Bordeaux to test himself against a top-level opponent on one of tennis’s biggest stages.
