Love Island USA Star Criticized by Pennsylvania Mayor for Leaving Police Job to Join Show, as Sister Responds

Sean Reifel, a contestant on the new season of Love Island USA, is facing criticism before the show’s premiere after resigning from his job as a police officer with the Bethlehem Police Department in Pennsylvania to join the reality series. Reifel, 29, introduced himself in a trailer by noting that he was a police officer, adding to the attention surrounding his appearance on the show. His decision to leave law enforcement after about a year on the force has sparked debate in Bethlehem and beyond.
Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds publicly criticized the resignation, saying the department invested significant time and taxpayer money in training Reifel at the police academy and is now left with another vacancy that will be difficult to fill until next year. In remarks reported by local outlet WHTM, Reynolds said he was disappointed that reality television participation took priority over police service. Police Chief Michelle Kott also expressed frustration, saying she valued Reifel as an officer but was disappointed by the departure because the department is already facing staffing challenges and heavy overtime demands.
The controversy has drawn a strong response from Reifel’s family, who say the public criticism is unfair and misleading. His sister, Brice Marie, pushed back on social media, arguing that the mayor and police department could have used the moment to build goodwill with the community and present a more positive image of law enforcement. She said the decision to attack her brother instead of supporting him reflected a missed opportunity for public relations and community engagement.
Brice Marie also said the department did not allow Sean Reifel to take unpaid leave to participate in the show, and that he had in fact requested leave. She argued that a reality series with a large audience could have helped younger viewers see law enforcement in a more human light, rather than reinforcing stereotypes. According to her, many early negative reactions to her brother were based solely on the fact that he is a police officer, before viewers knew anything else about him.
She also disputed part of the mayor’s criticism, saying Reifel had already completed police academy training in California in 2021 before working in Pennsylvania, meaning he did not need to be sent through the full academy again by the Bethlehem department. In her view, Reynolds’ statement overstated the financial burden on taxpayers and painted an unfair picture of the situation.
Reifel’s mother also weighed in on TikTok, confirming that he had applied for leave. Meanwhile, Reifel remains in the Love Island USA villa and is unable to respond directly to the backlash. His supporters argue that he is simply taking a rare opportunity to pursue love, fame, and a new career path, while critics say his exit leaves an already strained department short-staffed. The dispute has added an unexpected layer of drama to the season before it has even aired.
