Barry Manilow, 82, Shares Alarming Lung Cancer Update

Barry Manilow is recovering after being treated for Stage 1 lung cancer, but he says the biggest uncertainty now is whether his singing voice will fully return. The 81-year-old performer, who revealed his diagnosis in December 2025, discussed his recovery in an appearance on “Good Morning America,” where he said he recently tried a sound check and was shocked by how different he sounded. He admitted that he had long taken his voice for granted, but treatment has made him realize how fragile it can be.
Manilow said the experience has been deeply upsetting, especially because he is not ready to leave the stage behind. He has already postponed several dates on his farewell tour, “The Last Concerts,” while recovering, and his next scheduled performance is in Leeds on June 11. Although he says he is doing well overall, he acknowledged that it has taken longer than expected to move past the effects of the cancer and treatment.
According to Manilow, doctors first noticed a small spot on his left lung during an MRI in November 2025. Medical specialists recommended a lobectomy, choosing surgery instead of radiation or chemotherapy to remove the affected portion of the lung. The operation marked the beginning of a difficult recovery period, which was later complicated by a serious bout of pneumonia.
He said he spent seven days in the ICU fighting the infection and described the experience as terrifying, saying there were moments when he feared he might not survive. Manilow also praised the hospital staff, crediting nurses and doctors with helping him through one of the hardest periods of his life.
Despite those setbacks, the singer remains eager to return to performing. He said he feels physically strong and ready to get back on stage, but he does not yet know whether his voice will cooperate. For a performer whose career has been built on live singing, that uncertainty remains the most painful part of recovery.
Manilow said he hopes that if his voice sounds good again, he will be able to resume performing with confidence. At the same time, he admitted that he may become emotional when he returns to the spotlight after such a frightening health ordeal. Even so, his comments made clear that he is determined to continue if possible and is holding on to the hope that his voice will come back in time for the stage.
