Spider-Man: Brand New Day Promises Classic Spider-Man Elements

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will take Tom Holland’s Peter Parker into a new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shifting him from a high school-focused hero into a more classic, street-level version of Spider-Man operating in New York City. The film follows the end of the world’s memory of Peter Parker, leaving him isolated from his friends and from Zendaya’s MJ after the events tied to Doctor Strange’s spell. According to Marvel boss Kevin Feige, this makes the film the first MCU Spider-Man movie to center on the character’s traditional comic-book identity: a lonely Peter living in a small apartment, listening to police scanners, and using his powers to help his city responsibly.
The story of Brand New Day appears to focus heavily on Peter’s emotional state after the losses of Aunt May and Tony Stark. Director Destin Daniel Cretton says Peter throws himself entirely into his work as Spider-Man, describing the film’s core theme as a relatable response to grief and loss: shutting out everything else and focusing only on work, even if it is not healthy. That internal struggle is expected to define the movie’s tone, with Peter coping not only with personal isolation but also with unexpected changes to his abilities.
Producer Amy Pascal says the scale of the film is less about destruction and more about emotion. While it will still deliver the action and excitement expected from a summer superhero release, the movie is being shaped as a more personal story that explores Peter Parker’s inner life. The “bigness” of the film, Pascal notes, comes from emotional stakes rather than world-ending spectacle.
Brand New Day marks a notable evolution for Spider-Man on screen, following earlier live-action interpretations from Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, as well as the animated Miles Morales films. Holland’s version has already traveled from the energetic, teen-centered early MCU stories into a more mature phase, and this new installment appears ready to present him as a fully established Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in a city that no longer knows who he is.
Empire’s upcoming July 2026 issue will feature a full cover story on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, including interviews with Holland, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Kevin Feige, Cretton, and Pascal. The magazine goes on sale Thursday, June 4, 2026. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit cinemas on July 29, 2026.
