Barcelona unveil England forward Anthony Gordon after £69m-plus move from Newcastle

Anthony Gordon said he was “very, very excited” after completing his move, adding that the waiting process was difficult but that he always believed it would happen. Speaking after the deal was finalized, Gordon said he remained calm while staying at a hotel with his family and agents, and described the delay as being caused by legal issues and “very small details” beyond his control. He said he had already done his part and was ready for the transfer to go through.
Gordon also spoke in Spanish during his presentation, saying he learned the language because he believed as a child that he would one day play for Barcelona. The remarks added a personal touch to the announcement and highlighted how long he had envisioned playing for the Spanish club.
The forward leaves Newcastle after three and a half years at St James’ Park, having joined from Everton in January 2023. During his time with the Magpies, he made 152 appearances and became one of the team’s most important attacking players. He finished the current season as Newcastle’s top scorer, netting 17 goals in all competitions.
Gordon’s departure marks the end of a productive spell in the Premier League and a significant attacking loss for Newcastle. His consistency and output made him a key figure for the club, and his form this season underlined his importance as a goal threat. Moving to Barcelona now gives him the chance to test himself in a new league and on a bigger European stage.
Before settling into life at Barcelona, Gordon is set to join the England squad for a training camp in the United States on Monday. The camp is part of England’s preparations ahead of the World Cup, which begins on June 11. His involvement with the national team means he will head into the tournament period with a busy schedule and a major change in club environment already underway.
At Barcelona, Gordon will link up with fellow Englishman Marcus Rashford. Barcelona have not yet triggered the option to make Rashford’s loan move from Manchester United permanent for £26 million, so his long-term future at the club remains unresolved. Gordon’s arrival adds another English presence to the squad and increases the club’s attacking options.
For Gordon, the move represents both a career milestone and the fulfillment of a childhood dream. After years of waiting and a prolonged transfer process, he now begins a new chapter in Spain with Barcelona, carrying strong momentum from his best season yet at Newcastle and the expectation of contributing immediately at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
