French Open 2026: Victoria Mboko Returns to Paris as World No. 9
Victoria Mboko arrives at Roland-Garros 2026 in a far different position than she held a year ago, when the Canadian teenager made her Grand Slam debut in Paris as the world No. 120 and advanced to the round of 32. Now 19, Mboko enters the French Open as the No. 9 seed and one of the WTA Tour’s fastest-rising players, with expectations higher than ever.
Her surge began with a breakthrough title in Montreal last year, a result that ignited her rise up the rankings. She added another trophy in Hong Kong, reinforcing her status as a player quickly moving into the sport’s upper tier. Mboko also reached the Strasbourg final on Saturday, May 23, just days before the start of Roland-Garros, although she fell in three sets to Emma Navarro. Despite the loss, the run provided further evidence of her growing consistency on clay.
Mboko’s progress has been supported by a new coaching setup, with the Canadian now working under Wim Fissette, the former coach of Iga Swiatek. That partnership adds another layer of intrigue as she prepares for her first French Open as a genuine contender rather than an emerging prospect.
She opens her campaign against Czech teenager Nikola Bartunkova, another promising young player who reached the round of 32 at the Australian Open earlier this season and recently impressed on clay with a run to the last 16 in Rome. The first-round meeting gives Mboko an early test against a rising opponent with a similar profile.
If Mboko advances, her projected route becomes increasingly demanding. Madison Keys could await in the third round, though Mboko already owns a win over the American earlier this season on hard courts. Jessica Pegula may then feature as a fourth-round opponent, a matchup Mboko has not yet experienced on the WTA Tour. Should the draw follow its expected path, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka could again stand in her way in the quarter-finals. Sabalenka has already defeated Mboko twice this season, in Melbourne and Indian Wells, ending both of her runs.
Mboko is also set to compete in doubles alongside Filipina standout Alexandra Eala, renewing a partnership between two former junior rivals.
With a strong seed, a rising profile and a challenging draw, Mboko enters Roland-Garros 2026 as one of the tournament’s most closely watched young players.
