Cricket Is a Team Game: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shares His Father’s Lesson on Missing Centuries

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as the standout star of IPL 2026, delivering a sensational season for Rajasthan Royals and leading the Orange Cap race with 680 runs in 15 matches. The 15-year-old batter has produced a series of explosive innings that have made him one of the tournament’s biggest talking points, while also showcasing a mature attitude that puts team success above personal milestones.

Despite coming close to multiple centuries, Sooryavanshi has twice been dismissed in the nineties this season. Rather than slowing down to reach three figures, he has continued to play his natural attacking brand of cricket, reflecting a mindset shaped by advice from his father. Speaking on JioStar, Sooryavanshi said he was taught from childhood that individual runs lose their meaning if they do not help the team win. For him, an 80 in a winning effort is more valuable than a century in a losing cause.

He explained that cricket is ultimately a team sport and that helping Rajasthan Royals advance deeper into the tournament would create more opportunities for him to score hundreds in the future. In his view, prioritizing the team benefits both the side and his own long-term career, since success in the playoffs and finals can also bring more chances to set records.

His philosophy was evident during the IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Chasing a milestone, Sooryavanshi was on 97 off just 28 balls and stood one boundary away from becoming the fastest centurion in IPL history, surpassing Chris Gayle’s record. Instead of opting for a safer approach, he attempted an ambitious upper-cut off Praful Hinge. After noticing a fielder late, he tried to adjust the shot but mistimed it and was caught at deep third man on the 29th ball.

Another near-century came earlier in the season against Lucknow Super Giants, when he blasted 93 off only 38 deliveries. That innings featured seven fours and ten sixes, with a staggering strike rate of 244.73, and powered Rajasthan Royals to a commanding win. Once again, he fell short of a hundred, but his impact on the match was decisive.

Sooryavanshi’s season has combined breathtaking power-hitting with unusual maturity for a teenager. While centuries have eluded him, his willingness to keep attacking for the team has only enhanced his reputation.
