Solve inter-state water disputes through cooperation: PM Modi’s call comes soon after Tamil Nadu CM Vijay raised the Mekedatu issue

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the progress of key urban infrastructure and development initiatives, including Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, during a meeting focused on improving coordination between the Centre and states through the PRAGATI platform. PRAGATI is an ICT-based governance system designed to strengthen communication, enhance administrative efficiency, and speed up the implementation of major public projects.

During the review, Modi stressed that the cleanliness mission should be implemented in a way that delivers visible and measurable outcomes, not merely the construction of infrastructure. He said effective execution must be supported by monitoring, public participation, and stronger coordination among different departments. He also urged state governments to work more actively with central ministries and agencies to remove obstacles that are slowing project delivery and to ensure that decisions are taken and followed up in a timely manner.

The Prime Minister also reviewed the progress of the electricity sector and called for wider expansion of rooftop solar installations in urban areas, residential colonies, and public institutions. He suggested that solar panels should also be considered over canals, saying such projects could reduce water evaporation, help conserve land, and contribute to renewable energy generation. His remarks reflected a broader emphasis on using infrastructure projects to advance both sustainability and development goals.

In the discussion on roads and port-related projects, Modi highlighted the need to develop the proposed Vadhvan port as a model integrated transport hub. The goal, he indicated, should be to create a connected logistics and transportation system that can improve efficiency and support long-term economic growth. He said major infrastructure projects should move forward without unnecessary delays and that bottlenecks must be addressed quickly so that implementation stays on schedule.

The Prime Minister also reviewed the status of waste management-related projects, including waste processing plants and GOBARdhan units. He instructed states to accelerate their construction and ensure that these facilities become operational quickly. He reiterated that the success of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 depends not only on physical assets but also on sustained monitoring, accountability, and citizen involvement.

Overall, the meeting focused on speeding up project execution across sectors such as sanitation, renewable energy, roads, ports, and waste management. Modi underlined the importance of coordinated action between the Centre and states to improve governance, remove implementation barriers, and deliver results more effectively for urban development and public welfare.
