Charred Remains of Infant Found in Surat, Investigation Underway

Police in Surat’s Udhna area are investigating a shocking case after the partially burnt body of a newborn baby was found near Bhimnagar in the city’s industrial belt. The discovery caused panic among local residents, who spotted the remains early in the morning and alerted authorities. Large crowds gathered at the scene before police arrived to secure the area and begin an inquiry.

According to officials, the body is believed to be that of a baby around six to seven days old. Police Inspector RM Thakor said the newborn was allegedly dumped in a garbage heap by an unidentified person. Investigators suspect the garbage may later have been set on fire, or may have caught fire accidentally, leading to severe burns on the body. However, police have not yet confirmed how the fire started or whether the newborn had already died before the blaze.

A postmortem examination has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, the baby’s age and gender, and whether the injuries were caused before or after death. Police said the medical report will be crucial in establishing whether this was a case of abandonment, foul play, or another unexplained circumstance.

As part of the investigation, Udhna police are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby roads and buildings in an effort to identify the person who abandoned the newborn. Officers are also checking local clinics, hospitals and gynaecologists for any relevant leads. In addition, police are tracing suspicious individuals and vehicles seen in the area during the late-night and early-morning hours.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage and concern in Surat, with residents shocked by the cruelty of the act and the condition in which the baby was found. Authorities continue to treat the matter as a serious criminal investigation, and further details are expected once the postmortem results and surveillance review are complete.
