Marc Johnson, Skateboarding Icon, Dies at 49

Marc Johnson, the influential skateboarder credited with helping make the Bay Area one of skateboarding’s key hubs, has died at the age of 49. News of his passing was shared by his friend and fellow skater Louie Barletta in a lengthy tribute posted for Thrasher magazine. Barletta said Johnson had visited him in San Jose just days before his death and described him as sober, healthy, and full of life, saying they spent time reminiscing about the past and talking about the future. According to Barletta, Johnson even extended his trip by a few days to revisit old places around San Jose.

Barletta also recalled that when he dropped Johnson off at the airport, Johnson handed him an envelope. Inside, Barletta said, was a three-page list of Johnson’s hopes and dreams for the future. He wrote that he never imagined Johnson would be gone less than a month later. In his tribute, Barletta described Johnson as one of the most talented and creative people ever to ride a skateboard, calling him a genius and a tortured soul. He said Johnson wanted to be remembered for his skateboarding, not for his struggles or mistakes.

Johnson’s death has shocked the skateboarding community, especially those who followed his rise, setbacks, and later efforts to rebuild his life. Barletta reflected on both Johnson’s achievements and hardships, saying he had watched him fulfill his skateboarding dreams and later see his career fall apart. Despite those challenges, Barletta said Johnson ultimately made it out, traveled the world, and touched many lives along the way.

The tribute also emphasized Johnson’s generosity and influence within skateboarding. Barletta said he gave opportunities to people who may never have had them otherwise, highlighting the impact he had beyond his own career. His passing marks a major loss for skateboarding, where he was widely admired for both his talent and creative style. Friends, fans, and loved ones are now mourning the death of a skater who left a lasting impression on the sport and on the people around him.
