Palmeiras’ victory is symbolic, but Leila Pereira’s stance is poor

Palmeiras enjoyed a calmer start to the week after its victory over Flamengo at the Maracanã, with journalist Flávio Latif highlighting a positive shift in the mood around the club. He pointed to several individual performances that stood out in the match, especially right back Giay, midfielder Allan, and striker Flaco López, who all drew praise for their contributions. Latif also said Paulinho’s goal carried special symbolic value, because it ended a long scoring drought of 11 months for the forward. According to him, the result and the way it was achieved helped change the atmosphere inside the club, which had been dealing with tension and criticism in recent days.
Latif said the Maracanã performance gave Palmeiras a stronger sense of stability after a period of pressure. He described the victory as an important response from the team, not only because of the opponent and the stadium, but also because of the confidence it could restore within the squad and coaching staff. In his view, the match showed that Palmeiras still has players capable of deciding games and maintaining a high competitive level across different competitions.
Despite the positive result on the pitch, Latif warned that the debate around coach Abel Ferreira is likely to continue in the stands during the club’s next home match. He predicted a split atmosphere among supporters, with the Mancha organized fan group expected to keep its criticism, while other organized groups and a large part of the stadium are likely to support Abel. Latif said this kind of division would repeat a scenario seen last year and would not be healthy for the stadium environment.
He also said the club’s board was particularly bothered by the tone of the protests, especially because it believes the team remains highly competitive this season. According to Latif, Palmeiras is still alive in all competitions and has had only four defeats this year, which helps explain why the internal view is that the project should continue. He noted that even though the situation in the Libertadores is uncomfortable, the team can still advance with a draw, which reinforces the idea that the season is far from lost.
The comments reflect a club experiencing a mix of tension and optimism: pressure from part of the fan base, but also confidence generated by a strong away win and encouraging individual performances. For Palmeiras, the challenge now is to turn that momentum into a more united atmosphere as the season continues.
