CD Projekt Announces New Expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Poland-based video game developer CD Projekt said on Wednesday it will release a third story expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2027, a move that could help sustain interest in the franchise before the company’s next major game arrives. The announcement came as investors had been expecting the expansion in 2026, prompting CD Projekt’s shares to reverse earlier gains and fall about 4% in Warsaw trading by late morning.
The expansion is titled “Songs of the Past” and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It will feature Geralt of Rivia, the long-running protagonist of the Witcher series. CD Projekt said more details about the project will be disclosed in the summer. The new content is being developed with Fool’s Theory, a studio that includes developers who previously worked on the original Witcher 3.
The planned release may also influence expectations for The Witcher 4, which CD Projekt has not yet dated. Some analysts said the 2027 timing for the expansion raises the possibility that the next full Witcher installment could slip to 2028, rather than the 2027 launch some market participants had anticipated. CD Projekt has not confirmed any release window for the fourth game.
Originally released in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has become one of the company’s most successful titles, selling more than 60 million copies. That figure accounts for the majority of the 85 million copies sold across the entire Witcher franchise. The game has also won more than 250 Game of the Year awards, cementing its position as one of the most acclaimed role-playing games of the last decade.
The expansion announcement comes as CD Projekt continues to balance several major projects. In addition to Witcher 4, the company is working on the next game in its Cyberpunk franchise and two other projects codenamed Sirius and Hadar.
For investors, the new Witcher 3 content underscores CD Projekt’s strategy of extending the life of its biggest franchise while development continues on future releases. The 2027 timing indicates that the company sees meaningful commercial value in returning to The Witcher 3, even after the game’s long run of success and repeated rereleases across platforms.
The Witcher series remains central to CD Projekt’s identity and business outlook. The franchise’s strong sales, award-winning reputation, and enduring fan base continue to shape expectations around the company’s pipeline, with any update on The Witcher 4 or other planned titles likely to draw close attention from both players and shareholders.
