Around 100 firefighters battle blaze in Golders Green

Around 100 firefighters are responding to a large fire at a supermarket with flats above it in Golders Green, north-west London. The London Fire Brigade said it received the first of 56 calls shortly after 06:45 BST on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, reporting a blaze at a three-storey building on Golders Green Road. The fire service said the incident is producing a significant amount of smoke.
Fifteen fire engines from stations including Willesden, Finchley and West Hampstead have been sent to the scene as crews work to bring the fire under control. The brigade said the scale of the response reflects the size of the fire and the need to protect nearby properties in a busy residential and commercial area.
Residents and businesses in the surrounding area have been advised to keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke. Emergency services have also put a number of road closures in place, including on Golders Green Road near the junction with Beverley Gardens, to allow firefighters to access the site and reduce disruption around the scene.
Police said there have been no reported injuries. Authorities have not yet said how the fire started, and the cause remains unknown. Crews are continuing to tackle the blaze and assess the building for safety concerns, including the flats located above the supermarket.
Golders Green Road is a major route through the area, and the fire has caused significant emergency response activity during the morning commute. The incident has drawn dozens of emergency calls from members of the public, underlining the seriousness of the fire and the amount of smoke visible from the area.
The London Fire Brigade has urged people nearby to avoid the area where possible while operations continue. Firefighters are using multiple appliances and specialist resources to control the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.
The response remains ongoing, and further updates are expected as crews continue their work at the scene. For now, the main priorities are extinguishing the fire, protecting nearby homes and businesses, and ensuring the area remains safe for the public and emergency personnel.
