“Shelter” Starz Review: Stream It or Skip It?

Jason Statham stars in Shelter, an action thriller now streaming on Starz, directed by Ric Roman Waugh. The film follows Michael Mason, a reclusive former MI6 operative who lives alone on a remote Scottish island, keeping watch over a lighthouse that has long been out of service. Mason’s quiet, miserable routine of porridge, vodka, solitude, and guarded silence is interrupted when a young girl named Jessie arrives by boat with supplies. After a violent storm sinks the boat and kills Jessie’s uncle, Mason rescues the girl and brings her into his home while she recovers from an injured ankle.

What begins as a tense survival drama quickly becomes a familiar action setup: a hardened loner protects a vulnerable child while dangerous forces from his past close in. Jessie initially distrusts Mason and even hides a knife, but the two gradually form a bond as his rough kindness becomes more visible. The movie then reveals that Mason is not just an isolated lighthouse keeper but a lethal former spy, and his decision to leave the island triggers a manhunt.

The story shifts to the mainland, where a government surveillance operation tracks Mason and alerts officials who want him captured. Naomie Ackie plays Roberta Frost, a no-nonsense figure overseeing the operation from behind a wall of monitors. Bill Nighy appears as Stephen Manafort, an off-the-books power player determined to eliminate Mason and Jessie. The pursuit escalates into a series of fights, shootings, and violent escapes as Mason protects the girl from assassins and corrupt agents.

The review compares Shelter to other recent action films built around aging tough-guy leads, especially those starring Statham and Liam Neeson. It notes that Statham works best when he blends his hard-edged persona with a sly sense of humor, though Shelter plays him more straight-faced than some of his earlier roles. Still, the film gives him exactly the kind of material he can handle: a stoic protector, plenty of close-quarters combat, and a chance to dispatch enemies with fists, guns, knives, and improvised weapons.

Bodhi Rae Breathnach, who plays Jessie, is singled out as the standout performance. Her character gives the movie emotional weight, and her expressive presence is described as a highlight amid the familiar plot mechanics. The film is also praised for its action sequences, even if the screenplay relies heavily on genre clichés, tortured dialogue, and an overly complicated conspiracy that adds little to the core story.

Overall, Shelter is presented as a solid, workmanlike action film that knows exactly what it is: a dependable “dad movie” built for easy streaming. It may not break new ground, but it delivers enough tension, violence, and star power to make it a serviceable watch for fans of Jason Statham-led action.
