Brazil is 3rd, not 2nd, in Group C at the World Cup; understand why

Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Morocco in the 2026 World Cup opened the door for Scotland to take sole control of Group C after a 1-0 win over Haiti on Saturday, June 13. The result left Brazil in third place after the opening round, behind Morocco and Scotland, while Haiti remained without a point.
At MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, Brazil finished level with Morocco on all standard technical tiebreakers, but Morocco moved ahead on fair play. Brazil received two yellow cards, shown to Casemiro and Ibañez, while Morocco collected none. That disciplinary difference proved decisive in the group standings.
The outcome highlighted one of the updated tiebreaking rules for the 2026 World Cup. Unlike previous editions, the tournament no longer uses a draw to separate teams that are still tied after all other criteria have been applied. If teams remain level even after fair play is considered, FIFA’s ranking will now be used to decide who advances.
The tiebreaking process begins with head-to-head results among the tied teams. The first step is to compare points earned in matches between the teams involved. If that does not separate them, goal difference in those direct meetings is used, followed by goals scored in those same games.
If the tie still cannot be broken, the next set of criteria looks at overall performance in all group matches. Teams are ranked by overall goal difference, then by total goals scored in the group stage. Fair play points, based on yellow and red cards received by players and staff, come next.
If there is still no difference after those checks, the final criterion is the latest FIFA world ranking. The higher-ranked team would advance.
Brazil’s situation shows how important discipline can be in a tightly contested group. Even when two teams are equal in results and goals, bookings can affect their position in the standings. The rule change also adds new significance to FIFA rankings as a last-resort decider.
After the first round, Scotland’s win over Haiti gave it a narrow lead in Group C, while Brazil will need a better result in its next match to improve its position. Morocco, despite drawing with Brazil, benefited from the fair play advantage and sits ahead in the table. Haiti, after losing its opening match, faces an early challenge to stay in contention.
The opening round of Group C demonstrated how small details can shape the path to the knockout stage in the 2026 World Cup.
