Coronation Street Star Speaks Out After Surprise Role in Emmerdale’s Dr. Todd Plot

Angela Lonsdale, best known to soap fans for playing Emma Taylor in Coronation Street from 2000 to 2003, has joined Emmerdale in an issue-led storyline centred on Charity Dingle’s sexual assault plot. Lonsdale appears as DS Reid after Charity decides to report the rape she suffered at the hands of Dr Todd, who had been blackmailing her for weeks and threatening to expose the true parentage of baby Leyla. The storyline reaches a turning point when Todd sexually assaults Charity, prompting her to go to the police.

Lonsdale shared her support for the storyline on Instagram, describing it as deeply impactful and praising its sensitive direction. She said she felt honoured to join the Emmerdale cast and highlighted the work of the team behind the scenes, including Emma Atkins, who plays Charity Dingle, and director Becky Wild. In her posts, Lonsdale also directed anyone affected by the issues raised to ITV’s advice and support resources.

The actor has a long history in British television beyond Coronation Street. Her credits include Holby City, Doctors, Wolfblood, Our Girl and The Syndicate, and she also appeared in Hollyoaks in 2022 as Gill, the mother of student Joseph Holmes. Her arrival in Emmerdale adds further weight to a storyline designed to address sexual violence with sensitivity and realism.

Emmerdale continues to air on ITV1 on weeknights at 8pm and is also available to stream on ITVX. The programme’s current plot involving Charity has been framed as an important and emotionally difficult narrative, with the production encouraging viewers who may be affected by its themes to seek support.
