Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods Struggles to Fit In at a Seattle High School in ’90s-Set Prequel Trailer
Prime Video has released a new trailer for Elle, the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series starring Lexi Minetree as a young Elle Woods. Set in 1995, the show follows Elle before her Harvard years as she navigates a major move from Bel-Air to Seattle, where she struggles to adjust to a new high school, new social rules, and classmates who do not immediately accept her bright personality or signature pink style.
The trailer shows Elle reacting to the news that her family is relocating, with the move forcing her to leave behind her friends, familiar surroundings, and the world she knows. Once in Seattle, she quickly stands out at school for wearing colorful, polished outfits in a setting where most students dress in muted tones. The reactions she receives are not always kind, and the footage highlights the culture clash she experiences as she tries to fit in.
As No Doubt’s “Just A Girl” plays in the background, Elle phones a friend and admits that she feels like she does not speak the same language as anyone around her. She is later encouraged to “get fluent in Seattle,” underscoring the challenge of adapting to a new environment. In one scene, she even questions whether she really is the stereotypical L.A. girl others think she is, prompting a memorable response from her mother that reinforces her confidence and individuality.
The trailer also teases several storylines beyond Elle’s adjustment to her new school. She befriends a new group of classmates, gets involved in high school drama, attends a general-admission concert, and reunites with her dog, Bruiser. The series synopsis says Elle will face tricky friendships, forbidden romance, and questionable fashion choices, while also growing closer to her mother and relying on her family as a foundation through every challenge.
The series is designed as a coming-of-age story that shows how Elle Woods became the character audiences first met in Legally Blonde in 2001. Reese Witherspoon, who originated the role and returned for 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, serves as an executive producer on the prequel. The show stars 25-year-old Minetree, along with June Diane Raphael as Elle’s mother Eva, Tom Everett Scott as her father Wyatt, Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, and Amy Pietz.
The cast also includes late actor James Van Der Beek in a recurring role, along with Brad Harder, Chloe Wepper, Danielle Chand, David Burtka, Jessica Belkin, Kayla Maisonet, Lisa Yamada, Logan Shroyer, Matt Oberg, and Sharon Taylor. Elle was created by Laura Kittrell, who executive produces with Caroline Dries. Lauren Neustadter, Amanda Brown, Marc Platt, and Witherspoon also executive produce through Amazon MGM Studios and Hello Sunshine.
Elle premieres on Prime Video on July 1, and a second season has already been ordered.
