World Cup 2026: How Thomas Tuchel Began His Journey to Becoming England Manager at Wild Hip-Hop Parties

Thomas Tuchel’s early years in Stuttgart included an unexpected job that helped shape his confidence long before he became one of football’s best-known coaches. After moving to the city to study business administration, Tuchel found work in a bar inside the famous Radio Barth building on Stuttgart’s Rotebühlplatz. The site had once been a large music department store selling records and instruments, but after the business filed for insolvency in 1995, the building was marked for demolition. Before that happened, however, it was temporarily leased to young artists and turned into a short-lived but memorable cultural and nightlife hub. The Radio Bar on the ground floor quickly became a popular meeting place, especially as Germany’s hip-hop scene was beginning to grow.
Former manager Carlos Coelho later described how busy the bar became, saying crowds were so large that the doors sometimes had to be shut because no more people could fit inside. He said the historic location was part of the appeal, with many visitors remembering the building as the place where they had bought their first record. For Tuchel, the job started at the bottom. He collected empty bottles and glasses before moving on to waiting tables and eventually making cocktails. Looking back, he joked that he would not have wanted to drink the drinks he was preparing at the start.
Tuchel has since said that the experience gave him more than basic service skills. In an interview with Die Zeit, he explained that working in the bar night after night helped him gradually gain confidence. He said he learned to overcome his hesitation about approaching strangers and offering help, and that he discovered people accepted him for who he was, without knowing he was a former footballer. Those lessons, he suggested, were important in preparing him for later leadership roles in football.
The bar also became a place where Tuchel made lasting personal connections. One of the people he met there was Max Herre, a Stuttgart musician who later became one of Germany’s most successful rappers. In a 2024 podcast interview, Herre said Tuchel became part of his social circle and often attended his performances. On one occasion, Herre recalled, Tuchel even traveled to Vienna for a concert. The story offers a rare glimpse into Tuchel’s life before top-level management, showing how an ordinary bar job in a historic building helped build the confidence, people skills, and network that would later support his rise in football.
