French Open 2026 Results: 19-Year-Old Joao Fonseca Stuns Casper Ruud as Alexander Zverev Cruises Into Roland Garros Quarter-Finals

Alexander Zverev strengthened his status as the favorite for the men’s singles title at Roland Garros with a commanding straight-sets victory over Jesper de Jong, advancing to the quarter-finals for the sixth consecutive year. The world No. 3 and second seed has been considered a future Grand Slam champion for years, having reached finals at three of the four majors, but he is still chasing his first major trophy. With world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic both eliminated in the opening week, and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz sidelined by injury, the path to the title has become much clearer for the German.
De Jong, ranked more than 100 places below Zverev, made a lively start and pushed the second seed in the opening set. The Dutchman raced to a 3-0 lead and later went 3-0 up in the tie-break, but Zverev responded with seven straight points to seize control and take the set 7-6(7-3). The German then showed patience in the second set, waiting until the 10th game to convert one of only two break-point chances he earned before closing out a 6-4 lead. He finished strongly in the third set, dominating a 24-minute final set to complete a 7-6(7-3) 6-4 6-1 win.
Zverev was particularly dominant on serve over the final two sets, dropping just six points across nine service games. He also impressed at the net, winning 29 of 38 points in that area, underlining the all-court control that has made him one of the most consistent players in the draw. After the match, Zverev acknowledged the slow start but said he found his rhythm and felt comfortable once he settled into the contest. “My game is there,” he said, adding that it was about producing that level in matches.
The result places Zverev among a small group of top seeds still standing in the tournament. He is one of only three top-10 seeds left in the draw, one of just two players with prior experience in a major final, and a player with a strong record on clay, the surface on which he has won nine of his 24 ATP titles. Just as importantly, he has progressed through three of his four matches in straight sets, avoiding the kind of exhausting five-set battles that have taken a toll on several of his rivals. With the draw opening up and his form building, Zverev now looks increasingly well-positioned to push for the Grand Slam breakthrough that has so far eluded him.
