TNT and Ginebra Renew PBA Finals Rivalry in Commissioner’s Cup

Defending champion TNT and Barangay Ginebra open another chapter in their intense PBA Finals rivalry on Wednesday night in Game 1 of the Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m., with both teams eager to seize an early advantage in a matchup shaped by recent heartbreak and unfinished business.
TNT enters the series after reaching its fifth straight finals appearance, but the Tropang 5G are trying to end a modest title drought. They lost the last two conferences they played in the Philippine Cup, both against San Miguel, and are determined to avoid a third straight finals defeat. Ginebra, meanwhile, is also looking to return to the top after failing to capture the crown in its last three meetings with TNT. The Gin Kings’ last championship over the Tropang came in the Season 47 edition, and they have now gone seven conferences without a title.
Several players on both sides bring added motivation, especially those still chasing a first PBA championship. Ginebra guard Stephen Holt has been denied by TNT twice already and said he wants to make the most of another chance to win a title. TNT guard Jordan Heading, who has reached two previous All-Filipino finals only to fall to San Miguel, also sees this series as another opportunity to finally break through. Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, who missed part of TNT’s successful run in Season 49 because of injury, said he is excited to be healthy again and ready to help his team finish the job after back-to-back runner-up finishes.
The finals also introduces a fresh marquee battle between imports Chris McCullough of TNT and Justin Brownlee of Ginebra. Brownlee, one of the most reliable performers in PBA history, described McCullough as a versatile opponent and acknowledged the challenge of containing him. McCullough’s arrival as a replacement for the injured Bol Bol has made TNT more balanced and more dangerous, according to Ginebra coach Tim Cone. He noted that TNT now has more players contributing offensively and defensively, making the team harder to defend than before.
Still, the rivalry remains familiar at the top. TNT coach Chot Reyes and Cone are again the chief tacticians in a series that marks the fourth title showdown between the two proud franchises in the last eight conferences. With momentum, pride and championship urgency all in play, Game 1 is expected to set a physical and emotional tone for what could be another memorable finals battle between two of the league’s biggest teams.
