Facebook sequel The Social Reckoning gets first trailer, starring Aaron Sorkin’s new movie

Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network, titled The Social Reckoning, has released its first trailer and is set to revisit the Facebook story through the lens of the Wall Street Journal’s The Facebook Files. While not described as a direct sequel, the film returns to Mark Zuckerberg and the company’s internal culture, focusing on the fallout from whistleblower revelations and allegations that damaging findings were buried.

The new film stars Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg, taking over the role previously played by Jesse Eisenberg in the 2010 hit. Strong, who was Oscar-nominated for The Apprentice, has called the script one of the best he has ever read and said it speaks directly to the current moment. In the trailer, his Zuckerberg prepares for congressional testimony following the leak of confidential documents by former Facebook employee Frances Haugen to journalist Jeff Horwitz. He is shown defending the platform and presenting himself as a “free speech absolutist,” while also insisting he is no longer a young college dropout.

Mikey Madison, fresh off her best actress Oscar win for Anora, plays Haugen. In the trailer, her character voices concern about being used as an example by someone with immense power and resources. Jeremy Allen White portrays Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who helped expose the internal documents and the company’s handling of them. The cast also includes Wunmi Mosaku, Bill Burr and Betty Gilpin.

Sorkin has described the film as a David-and-Goliath story, centering on the tension between a powerful technology company and the individuals challenging it. He is writing and directing the project, continuing his long-standing interest in sharp, dialogue-driven dramas about power, institutions and public accountability. His previous directorial effort was Being the Ricardos, the Lucille Ball biopic starring Nicole Kidman.

The Social Network, released in 2010, became both a critical and commercial success, earning $224 million worldwide and winning three Academy Awards, including best adapted screenplay for Sorkin. Expectations are high for the new project given the original film’s lasting cultural impact and the continued relevance of Facebook’s role in public life, privacy, and misinformation debates.

The Social Reckoning is scheduled for release on October 9, with a fall festival premiere expected to come before the theatrical debut.
