Save Stargate Campaign Gains Momentum as Michael Shanks Leads Effort

Amazon MGM has canceled the planned Stargate revival, prompting a strong reaction from fans of the long-running sci-fi franchise. The decision sparked a wave of criticism on social media, where many viewers voiced disappointment and called on the studio to reconsider. Among the most visible supporters of the campaign is Michael Shanks, best known for playing archaeologist Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1. Rather than simply expressing frustration, Shanks has actively encouraged fans to speak up and show that there is still demand for a new Stargate series.

Shanks used X to tell fans that this was the time to make their interest known if they wanted to see a Stargate project involving original creators and performers. His message quickly energized parts of the fanbase, helping fuel the online push under the hashtag #SaveStargate. Supporters have since flooded the platform with appeals to Amazon MGM, arguing that the franchise still has a passionate audience and that the revival should be given another chance.

Many of the posts highlight the personal importance of Stargate to viewers, with some fans sharing stories about how the franchise influenced their lives or careers. Others have framed the cancellation as a missed opportunity for a beloved property with a loyal community. The tone across social media has ranged from heartfelt disappointment to angry calls for the studio to reverse course.

The canceled series had only limited public details before the plug was pulled. Martin Gero was attached as showrunner, bringing deep franchise experience after previously writing for Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate SG-1, and Stargate Universe. When the project was first announced in November 2025, Gero described the opportunity as a full-circle moment in his career. The new show was said to be a fresh take on the Stargate universe while still including elements that longtime fans would recognize.

According to the report, Amazon was uncertain whether the revival would have enough appeal beyond the existing fanbase. That concern appears to have played a role in the cancellation, despite the visible online backlash. Fans now hope that the public response will be strong enough to force a rethink, though it remains unclear whether the campaign will have any impact.

Some supporters have pointed to The Expanse as an example of fan pressure helping a canceled sci-fi series survive. That show was eventually revived by Amazon after ending at Syfy, allowing it to continue for three more seasons. Stargate fans are hoping for a similar outcome, but for now the project remains shelved.

Shanks continues to be a central voice in the effort to keep morale high, reminding fans that the franchise is not necessarily gone forever. For the moment, though, the revival appears to be on hold, with the future of Stargate now tied to whether enough viewers can convince Amazon MGM to change its mind.
