Princess of Wales Wears Lapis Lazuli Necklace During Visit to Cancer Center

The Princess of Wales made a public appearance in Manchester on Thursday, wearing a familiar pendant necklace that has become closely associated with several significant royal visits. The piece was previously seen during the Prince and Princess of Wales’ visit to the Glade of Light memorial, which honors the victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack. On this outing, Catherine paired the necklace with bee earrings, another symbolic nod to Manchester that she has worn on earlier visits to the city.

Catherine’s appearance was centered on a visit to The Christie, one of Europe’s leading cancer centers, where she spent time meeting staff, patients, and families. The visit began at the Oak Road Treatment Centre, where she spoke with people undergoing chemotherapy and learned more about the support provided during treatment. She also met patients receiving complementary therapy and heard how these services contribute to both physical comfort and emotional well-being.

The Princess of Wales then toured the art room, where she met resident artist Patricia Mountford and joined a session with patients. Her participation highlighted the role of creative expression in recovery and the ways art can offer comfort, focus, and a sense of calm during difficult medical journeys. Having studied art history at the University of St Andrews, Catherine has long shown an interest in the arts, and the visit connected that background with the therapeutic work taking place at the cancer center.

Her Royal Highness also met gardener Phil Walker to learn more about the well-being garden at The Christie. The landscaped space is designed to give patients and staff a place to pause, reflect, and find a moment of peace away from the pressures of treatment and daily clinical work. The garden forms part of the center’s wider approach to holistic care, which combines medical treatment with emotional and social support.

Catherine’s final stop was The Christie’s teenage-and-young-adult unit, which is funded by the Christie Charity. There she met staff, young patients, and their families to hear about the unit’s therapeutic, social, and recreational activities. The visit focused on the challenges faced by younger cancer patients and the importance of services that help them maintain connection, confidence, and support during a particularly difficult period.

The pendant worn on Thursday has been seen on several other important royal engagements. In addition to the Manchester memorial visit, the Princess of Wales also wore the jewel at the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Coach Core at the Copper Box Arena in October 2022. Its repeated appearance has made the necklace a subtle but meaningful part of her public wardrobe, particularly when paired with symbolic accessories linked to the places and causes she visits.
