Kerala Schools to Get Holiday Tomorrow as Heavy Rain Alert Issued

Heavy rain has prompted district authorities in Kerala to declare a holiday for educational institutions in Kozhikode, Kasaragod, and Kannur on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The closures were announced as a precaution after the Meteorological Department forecast a red alert in the affected districts and warned of continued intense rainfall and strong winds.
In Kasaragod, the collector said the holiday will apply to all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, professional colleges, anganwadis, tuition centers, ICSE and CBSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and religious educational institutions such as madrasas. Residential schools are exempt from the holiday. The collector also clarified that previously scheduled university examinations, public examinations, and interviews will not be postponed.
In Kozhikode, authorities cited the red alert, widespread waterlogging in several areas, and the possibility of more heavy rain and strong winds in the coming days as reasons for shutting all educational institutions on Tuesday. The order covers schools, madrasas, tuition centers, professional colleges, and anganwadis. University examinations and PSC examinations that were already scheduled will go ahead as planned without change.
Kannur also announced a holiday for all educational institutions on Tuesday, including professional colleges, anganwadis, tuition centers, ICSE and CBSE schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas, and madrasas. Residential schools are excluded from the order, and any previously scheduled university or public examinations, as well as interviews, will be held as planned.
The move was taken to reduce the risk of accidents and other weather-related emergencies as the region continues to face severe monsoon conditions. Officials urged residents and students to stay alert and follow local weather advisories and district administration instructions.
The announcement affects a wide range of institutions across the three districts and comes amid heightened concern over flooding, water accumulation, and dangerous travel conditions caused by persistent rainfall. School and college authorities, parents, and students have been advised to note that the closure is limited to educational institutions and does not apply to essential examinations already fixed in advance.
