Christian Eriksen Collapses During Denmark Friendly as Match Is Abandoned
Christian Eriksen was conscious and able to walk off the pitch after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine, in a frightening incident that briefly halted the match and led to its abandonment. The midfielder, aged 34, clutched his chest and fell in the 79th minute before medical staff rushed to treat him. Denmark later confirmed that he was conscious and “doing well under the circumstances,” while team doctor Morten Boesen said Eriksen recovered quickly after a brief loss of consciousness and that the pacemaker responded as expected. He was taken to hospital for further examinations to determine what caused the episode.
At the time of the stoppage, Denmark were leading 2-1 thanks to first-half goals from Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Maelhe. The game was not resumed after the emergency, and Ukraine’s coaching staff chose not to discuss football afterward, offering support to Eriksen, his family, Denmark’s players, and supporters. Their decision reflected the seriousness of the moment and the widespread concern surrounding the player’s condition.
The incident comes five years after Eriksen’s life-threatening cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, when he collapsed during Denmark’s group-stage match against Finland. On that occasion, his heart stopped for several minutes before teammates, medical personnel, and a defibrillator helped save his life. Eriksen later underwent treatment and received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, a device designed to detect dangerous heart rhythms and deliver shocks if needed.
Despite the severity of that earlier episode, Eriksen returned to professional football. After being unable to continue at Inter Milan because of regulations related to the device, he joined Brentford in January 2022 and made a remarkable comeback only months after his collapse at the European Championship. He later returned to the Denmark national team and then moved to Manchester United, where he spent three seasons.
His most recent club was Wolfsburg, where he made 34 appearances this season, although the team endured a difficult campaign and was relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in 29 years after the play-offs. The latest collapse has again raised concerns about Eriksen’s health and future, with hospital tests now expected to provide more information about the cause of the incident. For now, the main update is that he is conscious, stable, and under medical observation after another alarming on-field emergency.
