On Friday, São Paulo will also suspend its vehicle rotation policy because of the expected reduction in traffic circulation, according to the city government. The measure was announced by the Prefeitura de São Paulo through the Secretariat for Mobility and Traffic Management (SEMTRA) and the Traffic Engineering Company (CET). Other traffic restrictions already in place in the city will remain active.
The suspension means drivers will not be subject to the usual limitation that restricts vehicle circulation based on license plate numbers on that day. The decision is intended to reflect lower vehicle movement across the city and to ease travel conditions during the period in question. Even with the rotation suspended, authorities emphasized that existing rules and restrictions will continue to be enforced, indicating that the change applies only to the vehicle rotation system and not to other traffic controls.
São Paulo regularly uses traffic management measures to reduce congestion and regulate vehicle flow in heavily traveled areas. The rotation policy, known locally as “rodízio de veículos,” is one of the city’s main tools for controlling traffic volume on weekdays. When active, it limits the circulation of vehicles according to the final number on the license plate during designated hours. The temporary suspension on Friday removes that specific restriction for the day, but does not alter the broader framework of mobility rules in the city.
The announcement was made by SEMTRA and CET, the municipal bodies responsible for mobility policy and traffic operations. Their statement indicates that the city is monitoring traffic conditions and adjusting restrictions accordingly. The continuation of other measures suggests that authorities are maintaining caution, likely to preserve traffic order and ensure safety while adapting to changing circulation patterns.
For drivers and commuters, the decision means they may travel without concern for the usual rotation ban on Friday. However, they must still follow all remaining traffic regulations, including any localized restrictions, lane controls, parking rules, bus lane limits, or other enforcement measures that remain in effect. The city’s guidance makes clear that only the vehicle rotation policy is being paused.
The suspension is a temporary administrative adjustment and should not be interpreted as a broader relaxation of traffic rules in São Paulo. Authorities have kept the rest of the restrictions unchanged, underscoring that the city continues to manage mobility through multiple measures. As a result, residents and visitors should check official city updates before traveling to confirm which rules apply on the day.
The decision reflects the city’s effort to balance traffic management with current mobility conditions. While the suspension of vehicle rotation may reduce inconvenience for some drivers, the persistence of other restrictions means traffic oversight remains in place across São Paulo.
