Yomiuri Giants Manager Abe Resigns After Daughter’s Alleged Assault Arrest

The manager of Japan’s Yomiuri Giants, Abe Shinnosuke, has resigned after being arrested on Monday over allegations that he assaulted his teenage daughter at their home in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward. Abe was later released and held a press conference in which he apologized to fans, the Giants organization, and others involved in professional baseball, saying he had caused “great concern and trouble” and tarnished the image of the storied club.
According to Abe, the incident stemmed from a family dispute involving his 18-year-old daughter and her younger sister. He has admitted to allegations that he pushed the older daughter down while attempting to mediate the fight. Police arrested him after receiving a report from a local child guidance center. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
Sources said the daughter used generative AI to ask what she should do and was given the contact information for the child guidance center, which she later called. Investigators also said alcohol was detected on Abe’s breath after the incident, adding another element to the case as they continue to examine the circumstances.
A lawyer read a letter from Abe’s daughter, who expressed regret over how the matter escalated and said she was ashamed that it became such a large issue. She also said she had already reconciled with her father.
Abe, 47, joined the Yomiuri Giants in 2001 and built a prominent career as a player, collecting more than 2,000 hits and 400 home runs. He was in his third season as manager of the team when the scandal led to his arrest and resignation. The Yomiuri Giants are one of Japan’s most famous baseball clubs, and Abe’s departure marks a significant development for the organization as it faces the fallout from the incident.
The case has drawn attention because of Abe’s status in Japanese baseball and the unusual chain of events that brought the matter to authorities, including the daughter’s contact with the child guidance center. As the police investigation continues, the Giants will now have to move forward without their manager, while Abe’s long professional reputation remains overshadowed by the allegations and his public apology.
