DC’s Supergirl Movie Recreates Iconic Comic Moment in New Sneak Peek

James Gunn’s DC Universe will continue after the successful debut of Superman with Supergirl, a new film centered on Kara Zor-El, played by Milly Alcock, and her dog Krypto. Scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, the movie follows the Kryptonian hero as she embarks on a science-fiction adventure that adapts Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s 2022 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl is expected to draw heavily from the comic’s revenge-driven story, which pairs Kara with a young alien girl, Ruthye, on a journey across the galaxy. The source material is known for its mix of emotional weight, space travel, and striking visual style, and the film appears to be aiming for a similar tone. While the trailer has hinted at a more limited range of settings, the newly revealed image suggests the movie will still embrace the comic’s larger cosmic scope.

The exclusive image released alongside the report shows Kara aboard what looks like a “space bus,” a detail that echoes a memorable visual from Evely’s artwork in Woman of Tomorrow. The comparison suggests the film may be borrowing specific imagery from the comic, giving fans reason to expect a faithful adaptation of some of its most recognizable panels and concepts. Though the image raises questions about why a superpowered Kryptonian would need public transport in space, it reinforces the movie’s offbeat, adventurous identity.

The film also features Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, the villainous assassin who sets the story in motion by killing Ruthye’s father. Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Marye Knoll, the young alien who recruits Kara for her quest, while Jason Momoa appears as Lobo, adding another major DC character to the ensemble. With these additions, Supergirl looks positioned to expand the DC Universe beyond Earth and into a more expansive interstellar setting.

As one of the key early films in Gunn’s new DC slate, Supergirl will be closely watched for how it builds on the momentum of Superman and whether it can translate the critical strengths of the comic into a major studio release. The movie’s release date of June 26 places it among the summer’s notable superhero offerings, and the first look indicates that it may balance character-driven storytelling with the scale and spectacle expected from a Kryptonian-led blockbuster.
