Ashley Padilla on Diane Keaton, Social Media and Her Rise as SNL’s Breakout Star

Ashley Padilla’s rapid rise at “Saturday Night Live” began with a nervous shopping trip at Glendale’s Americana at Brand in September 2024, when she learned she had been cast as a featured player during the show’s landmark 50th season. Padilla, who had recently worked with Diane Keaton on the book “Fashion First,” was at Barnes & Noble buying copies when the news was set to break. Worried about public reaction, she waited with her mother until a friendly stranger became the first person they told. That moment now marks the start of what has become one of the most notable breakout stories in recent “SNL” history.

Since joining the cast, Padilla has quickly emerged as a standout performer. According to Latenighter.com, she had the most screen time and appearances in Season 51, making her the first featured player to lead the cast in that category. One of her most talked-about sketches featured her as a suburban mother slowly realizing she may be reconsidering her support for Donald Trump, a role that showcased her skill for awkward, character-driven comedy.

Padilla, a native of Livermore, California, moved to Los Angeles in 2014 to pursue comedy without a fixed plan. She says she was simply “following the funny” and found herself drawn to performing in character. Her development accelerated at the Groundlings, the respected improv and sketch troupe she describes as “comedy college.” There, she learned not only how to improvise but also how to write material for herself, a skill she has carried into “Saturday Night Live.”

Even with her growing success, Padilla says she still finds her career on “SNL” shocking. She admits that she expected more criticism and was surprised by how warmly audiences responded to her work. She describes sketch writing as vulnerable because it exposes her own sense of humor and ideas. For that reason, the positive reception has meant a great deal to her.

Padilla also comes across as deeply private. She avoids social media and says she prefers staying focused rather than posting about her life online. She jokes that her life is too ordinary to share, saying she mostly watches “Survivor” and eats tuna. That low-key personality contrasts with her increasingly visible role on one of television’s most famous stages.

In a separate “10 Questions” segment, Padilla shared a few personal details, including a childhood nickname, favorite karaoke songs, her love of “The Office,” and a hot take about people simply being kinder to one another. Her comments reinforced the impression of a performer who is witty, self-aware, and still adjusting to fame.
