Texas Tech Scores Against Mississippi State After Mia Williams Is Hit in WCWS

Mississippi State’s first Women’s College World Series appearance ended in a difficult opener, as the Bulldogs fell to Texas Tech 8-0 in five innings on May 28 at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. The loss sent Mississippi State into an elimination game against No. 2 seed Texas on May 29 at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
The game began with an immediate turning point when Texas Tech’s Mia Williams was hit by the first pitch from Alyssa Faircloth. That set the stage for Jackie Lis, who followed with a two-run home run to give the Red Raiders an early lead. Williams had already been hit five times in Texas Tech’s previous super regional series, and the sequence once again proved significant in the WCWS opener.
Mississippi State coach Samantha Ricketts said the Bulldogs knew Williams was not being hit intentionally, but she acknowledged that moments like that can energize a team in a high-pressure postseason environment. Texas Tech capitalized on that momentum throughout the game, while Mississippi State struggled to settle in during its first appearance on the WCWS stage.
Ricketts said Faircloth showed some early nerves in the first inning, which mattered against a Texas Tech lineup that offered little margin for error. The Red Raiders, who improved to 58-7, kept pressure on the Bulldogs from the outset and never allowed Mississippi State to recover. The Bulldogs finished the season opener at 43-20.
The emotional tone of the game carried into the fifth inning, when Williams again became part of a key Texas Tech rally. After leading off the inning with a walk, Williams advanced when Mississippi State catcher Des Rivera attempted a pickoff and accidentally hit her in the head with the ball. Because the ball went into the camera well behind first base, Williams was awarded two bases and moved to third.
Lis came through once more, driving in Williams with a single to continue Texas Tech’s offensive surge. The Red Raiders added more runs after that. Kaitlyn Terry singled to score Lis, Mihyia Davis singled to bring in Taylor Pannell, and Terry also scored on the play after a throwing error. The sequence ended the game in five innings via run rule.
For Mississippi State, the result was a harsh introduction to the Women’s College World Series, but the Bulldogs still have a chance to continue their run if they can win their elimination game against Texas. Texas Tech, meanwhile, advanced deeper into the tournament with a convincing all-around performance built on early offense, aggressive base running, and timely hitting.
The opener also highlighted how quickly momentum can swing in postseason softball, especially when emotions run high and every pitch matters. For Mississippi State, the challenge now is to regroup quickly and keep its historic WCWS debut from ending after just one game.
