Switzerland Without Timo Meier in Bid to Reach the Final

Swiss forward Timo Meier will miss his country’s World Championship semifinal against Norway on Saturday morning after receiving a one-game suspension from the IIHF. The suspension was handed down following a knee-on-knee collision with Sweden forward Oskar Sundqvist during Switzerland’s 3-1 quarterfinal win on Thursday.

Meier, 29, has been one of Switzerland’s top performers at the tournament. He is tied for fourth in scoring with three goals and 11 points through eight games. His absence is a significant blow as Switzerland prepares for a crucial matchup with Norway and continues its push for a first-ever world title.

The New Jersey Devils winger had a solid NHL season as well, finishing with 24 goals and 44 points in 77 games. New Jersey failed to qualify for the playoffs, allowing Meier to shift his focus fully to international play.

This year’s tournament marked Meier’s fifth appearance for Switzerland at the World Championship. He previously helped his nation win silver medals in 2018 and 2025. He also represented Switzerland at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic Games, where the team finished fifth.

Switzerland entered the semifinal with a perfect 7-0 record in the preliminary round, underscoring its strength throughout the competition. The team is now aiming to secure the first gold medal in Swiss hockey history after back-to-back silver-medal finishes in 2024 and 2025.

Without Meier, Switzerland will need other key contributors to step up against Norway as it tries to keep its championship hopes alive and move one step closer to a historic breakthrough.
