Tata Sierra EV vs JSW Jetour T2: New SUVs Set to Challenge India’s Market

India’s SUV market is gearing up for a busy festive season, with several major launches expected around Diwali 2026. Carmakers are preparing a mix of electric SUVs and plug-in hybrids aimed at buyers looking for new technology, long range, and stronger performance. Among the most anticipated models are the Nissan Tekton, Tata Sierra EV, MG Starlight 560, and JSW Jetour T2.
The Nissan Tekton will make its public debut in India on July 9, 2026, with market launch expected during the festive period before Diwali. Positioned in the midsize SUV segment, the Tekton will compete against popular rivals such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. It is expected to feature a boxy design inspired by the Nissan Patrol, along with a V-motion chrome grille and C-shaped LED lighting. Key equipment is likely to include a 10.1-inch infotainment system, a digital driver display, panoramic sunroof, Level 2 ADAS, and ventilated seats. The SUV is expected to share its platform and engine options with the new Renault Duster, including petrol turbo and strong hybrid powertrains.
Tata Motors is preparing to launch the Sierra EV between July and September 2026, under its Q2 FY2027 rollout plan. Built on the Acti.ev platform, the Sierra EV will target the growing electric SUV segment and compete with the Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti Suzuki e Vitara. It is expected to come with 55kWh and 65kWh battery options, with the larger pack likely paired with dual-motor all-wheel drive. Higher variants may also offer the Sierra’s signature lounge-style rear seating. A real-world range of over 500 km is expected, giving it a strong position among long-range electric SUVs.
MG is also preparing to enter the plug-in hybrid space with the Starlight 560, which is likely to arrive by October 2026. Based on the Wuling Starlight 560, the SUV has already been spotted testing in India. MG is reportedly considering both the plug-in hybrid version and an electric derivative. The PHEV is expected to use a 1.5-litre petrol engine combined with an electric motor and a 20.5kWh LFP battery. With a claimed 125 km of electric-only range and more than 1100 km of combined range, it is being positioned as a practical long-distance option. Performance figures include 197hp, 230Nm, and a 0-100kmph time of 9.7 seconds.
JSW Motors, in partnership with Jetour, is set to bring the Jetour T2 Plug-in Hybrid to India by Diwali 2026. The rugged SUV carries a Defender-like design and a high-output hybrid powertrain. It is expected to offer a combined range of around 1200 km, making it one of the longest-range SUVs in the segment. Power will come from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with dual electric motors and a 26.7kWh battery pack. The system is claimed to produce 381hp and 610Nm, while electric-only range is expected to be around 139 km for daily urban use.
Together, these launches highlight how India’s SUV market is shifting rapidly toward electrification, hybrid technology, and premium features ahead of the 2026 festive season.
