Chicago White Sox vs. Atlanta Braves series finale delayed by weather

The Chicago White Sox’s game against the Atlanta Braves scheduled for Thursday evening at Rate Field was postponed because a storm system moved through northern Illinois. The makeup game is set for 1:10 p.m. on Aug. 20.
Severe weather prompted broader concerns across the region. The entire Chicago metropolitan area was placed under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. and a flood watch until 11 p.m., reflecting the impact of the developing storm system.
The postponement came during an important stretch for the White Sox, who had already taken the first two games of the series against the Braves. Chicago entered the matchup with a 36-31 record and moved into first place in the American League Central after its strong start to the series. It marked the first time the White Sox had held a division lead this late in a season in five years.
The White Sox opened the series with a dramatic win on Tuesday, when outfielder Braden Montgomery hit a two-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning in his major-league debut. That blast lifted Chicago to a 6-5 victory over Atlanta. The following night, the Sox followed with a 2-1 win, allowing them to pass the Cleveland Guardians by a half-game in the division standings.
Atlanta entered the series with the best record in Major League Baseball, making Chicago’s back-to-back wins even more notable. The Braves’ trip to Rate Field was cut short by the weather delay, but the series continued to carry significance for both teams, especially for the White Sox as they tried to protect their new place atop the AL Central.
After the postponed game, the White Sox were scheduled to continue their homestand with a three-game series against the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers beginning Friday and running through Sunday at Rate Field. That series was expected to draw added attention, given Chicago’s recent surge and its chance to build on a division lead.
The weather interruption ended a night that had already been shaped by the threat of storms across the Chicago area. While the postponement was a setback for fans hoping to see the matchup as planned, the White Sox’s recent results continued to provide a major storyline in the AL Central race.
