Will Tom Selleck Appear in Boston Blue Season 2? Sonequa Martin-Green Addresses the Possibility

Sonequa Martin-Green is hoping Tom Selleck will eventually appear on Boston Blue, saying the spinoff has already invited the Blue Bloods icon and would welcome him if the right story comes together. Martin-Green, who leads Boston Blue as Lena, said the team is open to bringing in as many Blue Bloods cast members as possible because the new series is building on the world created by the original CBS drama.
Boston Blue Season 1 has already featured several familiar faces from Blue Bloods, including Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan, Marisa Ramirez as Maria Baez, Len Cariou as Henry Reagan, and Will Hochman as Joe Hill. Hochman also appeared in the Season 1 finale on May 22, helping Lena as she confronted newly discovered family connections, a storyline that echoed Joe’s own family history in Blue Bloods. The series also revealed earlier in the season that Jamie and Eddie had a baby, further tying the spinoff to the original show’s ongoing legacy.
Ramirez is set to return as Baez in Boston Blue Season 2, which is scheduled to premiere this fall on CBS. The creators have said that Blue Bloods stars are free to show up anytime, and Martin-Green emphasized that the production wants to keep expanding the universe while honoring the predecessor that made it possible. She said each returning cast member adds richness, legitimacy, and emotional depth to the series.
Selleck remains the biggest name fans are hoping to see. Martin-Green said he is “always getting asked” about a possible appearance and described the idea of having him join the show as something everyone would love. She added that the team would make sure any storyline for Frank Reagan would be strong enough to justify his return, reflecting Selleck’s own insistence on meaningful storytelling.
At the same time, Selleck has been cautious about reprising the role that made him one of CBS’s most recognizable stars. He has previously said he is unsure whether he would join Boston Blue, explaining that he feels his role is to preserve Blue Bloods’ place in television history rather than continue playing Frank Reagan. He has also spoken openly about his disappointment over Blue Bloods ending after 14 seasons, calling the cancellation a major letdown and questioning CBS’s decision to end a series that remained highly popular.
For now, Frank Reagan’s name continues to be mentioned throughout Boston Blue, keeping the possibility of a cameo alive. Martin-Green and the Boston Blue team appear eager to keep welcoming more original Blue Bloods characters as the spinoff develops its own identity while staying connected to the long-running family crime drama that came before it.
