Laverne Cox Opens Up About Falling for a MAGA Cop

Laverne Cox is reflecting on a past relationship that drew public attention because of her ex-boyfriend’s politics and occupation, saying she eventually realized staying in the relationship meant betraying herself. In a recent appearance on The View while promoting her upcoming memoir Transcendent, the Emmy-nominated actress discussed the backlash she faced after revealing that she had dated a younger New York City police officer who supported Donald Trump. Cox said the relationship began unexpectedly and that she was initially drawn to how kind, attentive, and supportive he was, describing him as the best partner she had dated at that point.
Over time, Cox said, she learned more about his job and his political views, and the differences became harder to ignore. She explained that she wanted to see him as a person beyond his profession and beliefs, but eventually concluded that their values were fundamentally incompatible. Cox said the relationship was not simply about a political disagreement, but about a deeper mismatch in worldview and character. She noted that while she believes some couples can make relationships work despite political differences, this case became something larger than politics alone.
Cox said the turning point came when she recognized that her feelings for him were causing her to overlook important truths. In her words, she loved him, but she loved herself more, and remaining in the relationship felt like a betrayal of her own identity. The actress said his politics and what she described as his “unexamined life” became clear after several years together, leading her to step back and reassess what she wanted and needed from a partner.
The relationship first became public in July 2025, when Cox discussed it while promoting her stage show Laverne Cox: Gurrl How Did I Get Here? At the time, she revealed that the romance had started during the pandemic and that she had been “madly in love” with a man who was 22 years younger than her. She described him as a blonde-haired, blue-eyed MAGA Republican voter and New York City police officer, while emphasizing that she did not adopt his politics and maintained her own beliefs.
After the public reaction became intense, Cox posted a follow-up video on Instagram to clarify her position. She said she understood why some people saw the relationship as troubling, especially given her advocacy for transgender rights and progressive causes. However, she stressed that she never embraced Trump’s politics and continued challenging views she disagreed with throughout the relationship. She also said the current political climate makes such differences feel more serious than they did several years ago.
As she prepares to release her memoir, Cox appears focused on reflecting openly about love, identity, and the importance of staying true to herself, even when the truth is uncomfortable.
