CrossFire Reborn: New Action-Adventure Game Announced

Smilegate-backed studio That’s No Moon has officially revealed its new CrossFire project, a premium single-player narrative action-adventure game shown at Summer Game Fest 2026. The studio, led by veterans from Naughty Dog, Infinity Ward, and EA, said the title is being built as a high-end reinterpretation of the globally popular CrossFire IP, but not as a sequel to the existing multiplayer shooter. Instead, the game is designed to expand the franchise into a new category with a cinematic story and fully focused solo campaign.
Directors Taylor Kurosaki and Jacob Minkoff said the project’s central goal is to deliver a “single-player narrative game based on the highest quality,” with no multiplayer or live-service elements. The team emphasized that it removed anything that could interrupt the story-driven experience, arguing that the strongest part of the game should be the emotional satisfaction of guiding a compelling character through a complete journey. The narrative will follow a single, linear path rather than branching choices, allowing the developers to focus on detailed performances, motion capture, and carefully structured storytelling.
The story centers on two protagonists, Layla Qassem and Delroy Cross, who come from opposing sides of a broader conflict. Layla is a mercenary who believes broken systems must be dismantled, while Delroy sees the collapse of order as a path to chaos and wants to preserve it. Forced into an uneasy alliance by a larger threat that includes a strange infection phenomenon, the pair must survive while their differing ideologies and hidden motives gradually surface. The developers said the dual-protagonist setup was inspired by the faction conflict at the heart of the original CrossFire universe.
Gameplay is being positioned as a realistic tactical action-adventure experience rather than a traditional run-and-gun shooter. The team said it worked with film, literary, and military advisers to create grounded combat where reckless assaults lead quickly to death. A major feature is “Adaptive Cover,” a new system built with Unreal Engine 5 technologies such as Nanite and Lumen. Unlike conventional cover systems, which rely on fixed points and box-like geometry, Adaptive Cover allows characters to use irregular terrain more naturally, with body posture adjusting in real time to line of sight and surroundings. The result is meant to create more organic battlefields and stronger tactical tension.
Kurosaki and Minkoff said stealth, positioning, distraction, and flanking will all be important, and that players can sometimes avoid combat entirely, though many encounters will force direct confrontation. The studio also confirmed that players will control only Layla, while Cross acts independently as a companion who supports her in combat and responds dynamically to the action. Enemy AI will be organized and lethal, using squad tactics, suppressive fire, and pursuit.
That’s No Moon said the game is intended as a complete premium release with no paid DLC, adjustable difficulty options at launch, and a worldwide audience in mind. The title is planned for PS5, Xbox, and PC.
