Fire Breaks Out at Restaurant Building “Ilha do Caranguejo” in Jardim Camburi

A fire broke out at the building of the Ilha do Caranguejo restaurant in Jardim Camburi, Vitória, on Monday morning, June 1, sending thick smoke from the roof and alarming nearby residents. Images shared by readers showed the smoke rising from the establishment as firefighters responded to the scene.

According to reporting by Victor Fontes and Francine Spinassé, the blaze is believed to have started in the restaurant’s kitchen after a fryer malfunctioned and caught fire. The flames reportedly spread to the electrical system and then into the roof structure, which intensified the smoke and made the incident more visible to people in the surrounding area.

Restaurant owner Lorena Motta said the fire began while the team was preparing food for the week. She explained that the restaurant does not open for lunch on Mondays, so only a reduced staff was present, along with one customer. Motta said one of the fryers developed a problem and caught fire, with the flames quickly reaching the piping overhead. She added that the fire brigade arrived promptly and managed to bring the situation under control. No injuries were reported.

Motta also said the extent of the damage was still unclear. From what the team understood at the time, the fire affected mostly the roof structure and did not reach the customer area. She said the staff had not yet gone upstairs to fully assess the losses. Despite the disruption, she expressed confidence that the restaurant would reopen soon after repairs and organization of the affected area.

The Military Fire Department confirmed it was called to the incident and said the occurrence remained under investigation. No further official details were available at the time of the report.

In a statement posted on social media, the restaurant’s management said it regretted the incident and confirmed that operations were suspended on Monday, June 1, because of a technical problem at the Vitória unit. The note emphasized that no one was hurt and said the team was working as quickly and safely as possible to resolve the situation. The restaurant also thanked customers for their understanding and praised the firefighters for their rapid response.

Residents of a nearby building said they had to leave their apartments after smoke began entering their homes. Amanda Bernardino, who lives in the area, said people went down to the street because the smoke was spreading inside the building and the fire appeared to be difficult to control. She said the apartments were left with a strong smell of smoke and that the column of smoke was very high, prompting neighbors to evacuate as a precaution.

The fire caused concern in the neighborhood, but authorities and the restaurant both confirmed that no one was injured. The main focus now is assessing the damage and restoring normal operations as soon as possible.
