Shot Fired in Downpatrick as Officer Struck by Stolen Police Car

Northern Ireland’s Secretary of State Hilary Benn has condemned what he described as a shocking incident, saying he was appalled by the attack and stressing that police officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect the public. He said any attack on those who serve the community is an attack on everyone.
The comments followed a serious incident in Downpatrick that has prompted strong reactions from political representatives across the region. South Down assembly member Cathy Mason of Sinn Féin said the reckless and dangerous incident had caused deep concern across the community. She said people in Downpatrick want those responsible to be held accountable and wished the injured officer a full and speedy recovery.
Trevor Clark, a member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board from the Democratic Unionist Party, also condemned the event, describing it as a shocking and disgraceful attack on a police officer. He said no officer should face the threat of being targeted in this way while carrying out duties to protect the public.
Social Democratic and Labour Party MLA for South Down Colin McGrath said it was totally unacceptable that the officer’s life had been put at risk. He also sent his best wishes for a quick recovery, while calling for a full review of the incident to establish how it happened and what failures may have occurred. McGrath said the theft of a police car was particularly serious because firearms and ammunition were present, adding that important lessons must be learned.
The incident has raised concerns about officer safety and the security of police equipment. Political figures from different parties have united in condemning the attack and calling for accountability, while emphasizing the need to learn from what happened. The case has also highlighted broader worries about the risks faced by police officers while on duty and the importance of ensuring that those responsible are identified and dealt with.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the injured officer’s recovery and on determining the full circumstances of the incident. Community leaders and elected representatives have urged swift action, accountability, and a thorough examination of how a police vehicle containing firearms and ammunition could be stolen. The cross-party response reflects the seriousness of the event and the widespread concern it has caused in Downpatrick and beyond.
