R&B Icon Peabo Bryson Suffers Stroke

Peabo Bryson, the veteran R&B singer known for his classic Disney duets “Beauty and the Beast” and “A Whole New World,” has suffered a stroke and is receiving medical treatment, according to a statement from his representative. His family has asked for privacy during this time while welcoming prayers and support from friends and fans.

Bryson, 75, is a two-time Grammy Award winner whose smooth, romantic vocals made him one of the most recognizable balladeers in R&B and pop music. He is best known for his duet recordings with Celine Dion and Regina Belle, which became signature songs for the Disney films “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin.” Over the years, he also recorded popular songs such as “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love,” “You’re Looking Like Love to Me,” and “As Long as There’s Christmas.”

Born in South Carolina, Bryson began his career in the 1970s as a member of Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display before launching his solo career. He was first signed to the indie label Bang Records and released his debut album in 1976, later moving to Capitol Records the following year. That transition helped set the stage for a long run of success on the R&B charts.

Bryson built a strong catalog of hits throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, including “Feel the Fire,” “Reaching for the Sky,” “I’m So into You,” and “Crosswinds.” In 1984, he earned his first Top 10 pop hit with “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again,” which expanded his crossover appeal. He later followed with songs such as “Show and Tell” and “Can You Stop the Rain.”

Beyond recording, Bryson also appeared on the soap opera “One Life to Live” in 1985 and contributed vocals to its theme song. That version became the show’s main theme and remained on air for several years.

A major part of Bryson’s career was his work in duets, especially with female vocalists. In 1983, he released the duet album “Born to Love” with Roberta Flack. He later recorded successful collaborations with Angela Bofill, Regina Belle, and others, helping define his legacy as one of the premier duet singers of his era.

Bryson’s illness has drawn concern from fans and the music industry, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
