PGA Tour Veteran Takes Lead at Colonial, Faces Tough Test Ahead

Eric Cole surged into the final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge with a seven-under-par 63 on Saturday at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, taking a one-shot lead after 54 holes. The 37-year-old PGA Tour veteran made the day’s best score by two strokes and opened a clear path into Sunday, but he remains in search of his first career victory. This week marks his 120th PGA Tour start, and while he has recorded multiple runner-up and third-place finishes, including a playoff loss at the 2023 Honda Classic, he has yet to break through for a win.

Cole began the third round five shots behind the lead, but he quickly gained momentum on a firm and challenging Colonial layout. He birdied four of the first nine holes, then added birdies at 10, 11, and 14. His only bogey came at the 15th, but he responded immediately with a birdie at 16 and closed with two pars to finish in the clubhouse at 12 under. Hours later, his score held up for the outright lead entering the final round.

After the round, Cole said his strong start was crucial because conditions were tougher than earlier in the week. He noted that the course was firmer and more difficult on Saturday, making it important to string together good shots and convert scoring chances when they appeared. Looking ahead to Sunday, he said he expects another demanding day, especially if wind becomes a factor, and added that he will need to stay prepared for anything the course presents.

Ryan Gerard is one shot back at 11 under after finishing with back-to-back birdies and a 68 on Saturday. Gerard said the closing stretch could prove important in the final round because opportunities will be limited on a course expected to remain difficult. He emphasized the need for patience, good positioning, and an aggressive mindset when chances arise.

J.J. Spaun and Mac Meissner are tied at 10 under, putting them within striking distance heading into the final round. Spaun, the 2025 U.S. Open champion, has recent winning form after capturing the Valero Texas Open about a month ago, while Meissner stayed in contention with a steady round.

A larger group sits further back at seven under, including Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland, Ludvig Åberg, Akshay Bhatia, and Brian Harman. With several accomplished players still in range, Sunday’s finish is shaping up as a tightly packed race on a course that has already shown it can produce difficult scoring conditions.

Cole’s performance stood out because he handled Colonial’s classic demands better than anyone on Saturday. If he can repeat that precision and remain composed under pressure, he will have a real chance to capture the long-awaited first PGA Tour title that has eluded him through more than a decade of starts.
