Shopkeeper robbed of lottery scratchcards in Coatbridge

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard that police quickly responded after a robbery at a shop in Coatbridge and detained Callum Bradley near the scene. The 26-year-old admitted robbing Zubair Akhtar at USave on Woodside Street on August 30 last year, as well as acting in a threatening or abusive manner toward police officers after his arrest.
Prosecutor Flora McCamley told the court that Mr Akhtar was working in the shop around 4pm when Bradley entered, apparently under the influence of alcohol. According to the evidence presented, Bradley asked the shopkeeper to call a taxi, but the request was refused. He then remained in the store while another customer was being served.
Once that customer had left, Bradley moved toward the till area and tried to take scratchcards from a display stand. Mr Akhtar attempted to stop him, and a struggle followed. Bradley left the shop with three scratchcards. Police were called immediately and officers later found him in nearby Woodside Street, close to the shop.
The court heard that Bradley became aggressive after being detained. Ms McCamley said he shouted threats at officers, including claims that he would “kick your head in” and that someone would be “knocked out in the cell.”
Defence solicitor Simon Gilmour said Bradley had acted “foolishly while intoxicated.” He told the court the offence was at “the bottom end of the scale” for robbery, suggesting the case involved relatively limited seriousness compared with more violent crimes.
Sheriff Joseph Hughes was shown CCTV footage of the incident during proceedings. He deferred sentencing until next month so that background reports and an electronic tagging assessment can be completed.
Bradley, whose address was given as Willow Drive, Airdrie, remains on bail while the case is continued.
