Sarah Michelle Gellar Pays Tribute to Buffy the Vampire Slayer Co-Star Anthony Head Following His Death

Sarah Michelle Gellar has paid tribute to her Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Anthony Head following news of his death at age 72. Head’s daughters, Emily and Daisy Head, announced that he died peacefully from complications related to pneumonia. Gellar, who played Buffy Summers opposite Head’s Rupert Giles, shared her grief on Instagram with a heartfelt message remembering him as someone she was lucky to know.

In her post, Gellar referenced a famous exchange between Buffy and Giles, writing that while the character once said, “Tell Giles I figured it out and I’m ok,” she herself could not say the same. She expressed that she was “the lucky one” because she knew Head and thanked Emily and Daisy for sharing their father with her and with the world. Her tribute reflected both personal sorrow and appreciation for the lasting impact Head had on her life and career.

Gellar also posted several throwback photos showing moments from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, including images with Head and other cast members, as well as family photos featuring her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. and their daughter Charlotte. Alongside the images, she shared a memorable scene between Buffy and Giles in which Buffy asks, “Does it ever get easy, life?” and Giles responds with a reassuring, if imperfect, explanation about good and evil, heroism, and happy endings.

The tribute highlighted the strong bond between the two actors and the deep connection fans still feel to their characters. Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains one of the most influential TV series of its era, and the relationship between Buffy and Giles was central to the show’s emotional core. Gellar’s message showed how much Head meant to her beyond the screen, describing the loss as deeply painful.

Head’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from fans and those who worked with him over the years. His long career included memorable roles across television and film, but for many viewers, his portrayal of Rupert Giles made him an unforgettable figure in pop culture. Gellar’s tribute serves as a moving reminder of the friendships formed on set and the enduring legacy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
