Rebellion Erupts in Mahayuti Amid Maharashtra Legislative Council Election; BJP, NCP and Shinde Faction Take This Decision

Maharashtra is set to hold Legislative Council elections on June 18, and the contest has exposed signs of strain within the ruling Mahayuti alliance. The coalition, led by the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, had been under pressure over seat-sharing and possible internal rebellion, prompting concerns about unity ahead of the vote. In response to the speculation, alliance leaders planned a joint press conference on Wednesday, June 3, with BJP leader Ravindra Chavan, Shiv Sena leader Uday Samant and NCP leader Sunil Tatkare expected to address the media together at noon.

Despite reports of dissent, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde insisted that Mahayuti remains fully united and will fight the election as a single front. Shinde said the alliance is confident of winning all 17 seats in the upcoming MLC polls and dismissed rumors of infighting as politically motivated. He also claimed that the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi would fail to secure even one seat. According to Shinde, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has already clarified the framework for seat allocation, and the alliance partners are working together to push Maharashtra’s development agenda.

The seat-sharing arrangement within Mahayuti has now been finalized after discussions and high-level meetings. Under the agreed formula, the BJP will contest 11 seats, Shiv Sena will get 4 seats, and the NCP will receive 2 seats. Maharashtra will elect members to 17 Legislative Council seats this month, and the division of seats among the ruling parties became a key issue after the election schedule was announced. The agreement came shortly before the last day for filing nominations, helping the alliance avoid a public split at a critical moment.

The developments come at a politically sensitive time for the coalition, as signs of disagreement within the alliance had raised questions about its cohesion. However, Shinde’s remarks were aimed at projecting confidence and stability, with the deputy chief minister arguing that the opposition was unable to accept the unity of Mahayuti. The alliance believes its strength lies in coordination between the three partners and in the work being done by the state government.

The MLC election is being seen as an important test of support for the ruling alliance in Maharashtra. While the opposition is attempting to capitalize on any division within Mahayuti, the ruling bloc is trying to present a united face and avoid giving its rivals any advantage. With seat-sharing settled and leaders preparing to appear together, the alliance is signaling that it intends to move forward without disruption. Shinde’s comments reflect the government’s effort to reassure supporters that the coalition remains intact and prepared for the contest.
