Oaks Day live: latest updates, non-runners, market movers and more as Derby Festival begins at Epsom

Derby day at Epsom, long considered one of London’s classic social outings, welcomed back a familiar pair of local characters after a long absence: pearly king Clive and pearly queen Yvette. Clive made clear that their title is ceremonial rather than romantic, explaining that they are “not a couple except in the pearly sense.” The pair had not been invited to Epsom for ten years, making this year’s return a notable comeback.

Clive said their appearances at public events are part of a charity-driven tradition. He described a busy schedule that includes visiting pubs, taking part in sing-songs at old people’s homes, and generally finding ways to raise money for good causes. He added that they even have to pay for their own beer, underlining the volunteer spirit behind their role.

Despite the prestige and scale of Derby day, Clive appeared content simply to be back among the crowds. He said he was enjoying the atmosphere and singled out the drug-sniffer dogs as particularly entertaining, suggesting that the off-track spectacle was as memorable as the racing itself.

As one of the sport’s biggest betting meetings, Epsom Derby day usually draws intense interest from bookmakers and punters alike. Clive, however, was not in a position to place any bets. He said he was not allowed to gamble while attending the event, and added that he did not bet anyway. When pressed for a Derby selection, he declined to offer a serious tip, joking only that horse number seven should be backed.

That horse was identified as Benvenuto Cellini.
