Netflix Sets Series Premiere Date for A Different World

Netflix’s new A Different World sequel series will premiere on September 24, 2026, exactly 39 years after the original sitcom first debuted in 1987. The single-camera comedy will feature 10 half-hour episodes and continues the story at Hillman College with a fresh generation of students while bringing back familiar faces from the beloved original series.
The streamer has released key art and a teaser video introducing the new lead character, Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. Deborah is the daughter of Hillman legends Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, played in the original series by Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison. A nod to the classic show appears in the teaser, as Deborah wears the iconic flip-up glasses that made Dwayne Wayne one of television’s most recognizable characters.
The new series centers on Deborah as she arrives at Hillman, where she is described as a sheltered but spirited young woman with a big heart and a desire to find her own place on campus. The sequel brings Hillman back to life with a new class of students whose stories reflect a wide range of Black experiences in college.
Among the new characters are Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first-generation criminal justice major; Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a star athlete making decisions about legacy and identity; Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a talented psychology student who helps everyone else while struggling with his own issues; Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a small-town, church-raised student exploring her values; and Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur trying to bring his vision to life.
The sequel will also feature returning original cast members, including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, and Darryl M. Bell, signaling a strong connection to the legacy of the 1987 series. Their return adds continuity for longtime fans while supporting the new stories being introduced for a modern audience.
The series is being led by showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride, with Debbie Allen serving as executive producer and director. Maleah Joi Moon, Pride, and Allen are currently in Miami for the Black Television event at the American Black Film Festival, where they are speaking publicly about the project for the first time.
With Hillman College once again at the center of the story, the new A Different World aims to blend nostalgia with a contemporary perspective, revisiting the spirit of the original series while exploring the challenges, friendships, ambitions, and identity journeys of a new generation of students. The combination of legacy characters, updated campus life, and a new ensemble places the sequel in a position to connect both longtime viewers and new audiences when it arrives on Netflix in September 2026.
