McDonald’s Worker in Yuba City in ICU After Alleged Hot Oil Attack by Coworker Causes Severe Burns

A 20-year-old McDonald’s employee in Yuba City, California, is recovering in intensive care after police say a coworker threw a hot liquid on him during a shift, causing severe burns to his face, neck, right arm and back.

The injured worker, Jacob Smith, was taken to the UC Davis burn ICU and remained there nearly a week after the incident. His mother, Amber Smith, said the burns cover the side of his face, the length of his neck, his right arm and much of his back. She described the pain as extreme and said doctors have kept him in intensive care because his condition requires specialized treatment and strong pain management.

According to the family, Smith was preparing to end his shift at the McDonald’s restaurant when the attack occurred. Amber Smith said her son was in the office counting money when he suddenly turned and a hot substance was thrown on him. The family believes the liquid may have been hot oil. Doctors are now focused on reducing the size and severity of the burns, especially on his back and neck, in hopes of limiting the need for skin grafts. Smith is expected to undergo surgery next week.

Yuba City police identified the suspect as Jalani Bluett. Authorities said Bluett was arrested by Sutter County deputies and is facing a charge of battery causing serious bodily injury. Investigators have not released a possible motive or explained what led to the confrontation. Police said the suspect left the restaurant after the incident.

Smith’s mother said the family is focused on his recovery but also wants accountability. She said she hopes the suspect is held responsible for the harm caused to her son and that he fully understands the pain and suffering Smith is enduring. The family said they do not yet know how long recovery will take and are approaching the situation one day at a time.

The incident has drawn attention because it happened at a workplace where both men were employed, turning a routine shift into a violent assault that left one young worker with life-altering injuries. Local media outlets reached out to McDonald’s for comment, but the company had not responded as of Friday.

Smith remains under close medical care as doctors work to stabilize his condition and plan further treatment. His family says the next steps will depend on how well he responds to surgery and ongoing burn care.
